Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE)
Founded in 1670, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh delivers world-class biodiversity research to underpin the conservation and sustainable use of the world’s plants and to respond to the climate emergency. We work in Scotland and with partners in more than 35 countries around the world to undertake research and to provide training and capacity building including an MSc in Biodiversity and Taxonomy of Plants delivered in partnership with the University of Edinburgh.

Wind-dispersed seeds blur phylogeographic breaks: The complex evolutionary history of Populus lasiocarpa around the Sichuan Basin
(Keia Publishing, 2023-03)The strength of phylogeographic breaks can vary among species in the same area despite being subject to the same geological and climate history due to differences in biological traits. Several important phy-logeographic ... -
Variation in gene expression along an elevation gradient of Rhododendron sanguineum var. haemaleum assessed in a comparative transcriptomic analysis
(Frontiers Media S.A., 2023-03-21)Selection along environmental gradients may play a vital role in driving adaptive evolution. Nevertheless, genomic variation and genetic adaptation along environmental clines remains largely unknown in plants in alpine ... -
A taxonomic dataset of preserved specimen occurrences of Theobroma and Herrania (Malvaceae, Byttnerioideae) stored in 2020
(Pensoft, 2023-03-30)Abstract. BackgroundSpecies from the "cacao group" are traditionally allocated into two genera, Theobroma and Herrania (Malvaceae, Byttnerioideae), both groups of Neotropical species economically relevant, such as the ... -
A high quality, high molecular weight DNA extraction method for PacBio HiFi genome sequencing of recalcitrant plants
(BMC, 2023-04-29)Abstract. BACKGROUND: PacBio HiFi sequencing provides highly accurate long-read sequencing datasets which are of great advantage for whole genome sequencing projects. One limitation of the method is the requirement for ... -

Bryophytes and Pteridophytes: spore-bearing land plants
(Cambridge University Press, 2023-03-05)Spore-bearing land plants are much fewer in number than flowering plants, with around 20,000 bryophytes and 12,000 pteridophytes, but they have a much longer history, with the first recognisable land plant fossil dating ... -

Lichens as spatially transferable bioindicators for monitoring nitrogen pollution
(Elsevier, 2023-07-01)Excess nitrogen is a pollutant and global problem that harms ecosystems and can severely affect human health. Pollutant nitrogen is becoming more widespread and intensifying in the tropics. There is thus a requirement to ... -
Spatial distribution of aboveground biomass stock in tropical dry forest in Brazil
(Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology (SISEF), 2023-04-17)Climate change is being intensified by anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gasses, highlighting the value of forests for carbon dioxide storing carbon in their biomass. Seasonally dry tropical forests are a neglected, ... -

Cost-effective restoration for carbon sequestration across Brazil's biomes
(Elsevier, 2023-06-10)Tropical ecosystems are central to the global focus on halting and reversing habitat destruction as a means of mitigating carbon emissions. Brazil has been highlighted as a vital part of global climate agreements because, ... -
Marsupella lusitanica (Gymnomitriaceae, Marchantiophyta), a New Species of Sect. Ustulatae from Mountain Ranges of Portugal
(MDPI, 2023-03-27)A new species of Marsupella sect. Ustulatae Müll. Frib. ex R.M. Schust. is described following an integrated morphological and molecular–phylogenetic study which examined the recently found dioicous plants growing epilithically ... -
Mapping the root systems of individual trees in a natural community using genotyping-by-sequencing
(John Wiley & Sons, 2023-05)Summary. The architecture of root systems is an important driver of plant fitness, competition andecosystem processes. However, the methodological difficulty of mapping roots hampers the study of these processes. Existing ... -
Diversity of naturalized and invasive plant species across land use types in an inner Tarai Valley of Central Nepal
(Springer Nature, 2022-08-17)Diversity of naturalized and invasive plants often vary across land use types. However, empirical studies analysing such patterns are mostly lacking at local level where management intervention are implemented. In this ... -
Revision of the genus Didissandra (Gesneriaceae)
(Duncker & Humblot, 1997-11-26)In the genus Didissandra C. B. Clarke, in the emended sense of WEBER & BURTT (1998a), eight species are recognized, two of the new, one (D. elongata) with four subspecies. The genus comprises two sections: (1) sect. ... -
